Traditional Japanese KOGEI "WAZA" @Iwate

Serendouce Crafts, whose mission is “creating encounters with Japanese crafts,” holds original rotating exhibitions in collaboration with traditional craft creators from various regions in Japan with the aim of passing down the techniques of traditional crafts and revitalizing local communities.

The first online exhibition is the Iwate Prefecture Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Located in the northern part of Japan’s Tohoku region, Iwate Prefecture is home to Chuson-ji Temple and Motsu-ji Temple, component assets that make up the World Heritage sites. It is also known for Hiraizumi-cho, conjectured to have been the second largest city in Japan after Kyoto in the 11th and 12th centuries; Oshu City, the birthplace of Shohei Ohtani, a Major League Baseball player; and Morioka City, which is home of the sacred folk art site Kogensha, and the city was selected as one of the “52 Places to Go in 2023” by the New York Times.

In Iwate, crafts have been a part of everyday life since ancient times, and their manufacturing techniques have been handed down from generation to generation. In this exhibition, Serendouce Crafts will introduce Iwayado Tansu (chest of drawers) and Nanbu Tekki (ironware), both of which are designated as national traditional crafts by the Japanese government.

知る人ぞ知る、手仕事の国・岩手

「日本の工芸品との出会いを創る」をミッションに掲げるセレンデュース・クラフツでは、伝統工芸の技術継承や地域活性を目的に、日本の各地域の伝統工芸とコラボレーションしたオンライン限定販売企画展を開催します。

第1弾は、『岩手県の伝統工芸品展』。日本の東北地方の北部に位置する岩手県は、世界遺産の構成資産である「中尊寺」と「毛越寺」を有し、11〜12世紀には京都に次ぐ日本で2番目に大きな都市だったと推察されている平泉町や、メジャーリーガー・大谷翔平選手の出身地である奥州市、民藝の聖地「光原社」を有し、『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』の「2023年に行くべき52カ所」に選ばれた盛岡市などで知られています。

古くから工芸品が暮らしに根づき、その製造技術が脈々と受け継がれてきた同地から、今回セレンデュース・クラフツでは、国の伝統的工芸品にも指定されている「岩谷堂箪笥」と「南部鉄器」を紹介します。
