Iwayado Tansu small karakuri tansu with wheels/からくりタンス車付（小）

This is a karakuri kiri tansu (paulownia chests of drawers) with wheels. In the Edo period, it was common to live in a row house in Japan. In those days, there were many fires, and people had to flee with their important belongings each time. A chest with wheels is believed to have been valued by people because if they put their important belongings in it, they could escape by pulling the whole chest when a fire broke out. Today, it is appreciated for its beautiful appearance with the wheels attached, for its interior design, and for the fact that it can be moved around, making it easy to clean the room.

 

It has shinobi in three places. The following three techniques are adopted in making shinobi: 1) the air pressure system, which makes shinobi appear using the air pressure transmitted by moving a drawer; 2) the small box in the back, which hides shinobi in the back of a drawer; and 3) the back pulling, in which shinobi can be pulled out from the back of the drawer.

It is a kind of the red color. Red is considered in Japan as the color that wards off evil spirits and has long been used for shrine gates and lacquerware.

What is Iwayado Tansu?「岩谷堂箪笥」とは...

 

 

車が付いた桐箪笥です。江戸時代、日本は長屋暮らしが一般的でした。当時は火災が多く、その度に大切なものをもって逃げていたそうで、車付きの箪笥に大切なものを入れておけば、箪笥ごと引っ張って逃げることができたことから重宝されたと考えられています。現在は車が付いた佇まいが美しく、インテリアとして、また、移動できることで掃除もしやすいことが評価されています。

 

からくり箪笥で、3箇所に忍びが施されています。引き出しを動かす風圧で現れる「風圧式」、引き出しの奥に隠された「奥に小箱」、引き出しの裏側から引き出せる「裏引き」という手法が採用されました。

カラーは、セレンデュース・クラフツオリジナルのローズウッド。「赤」の一種で、赤は日本では邪気を払う色とされ、古くから神社の鳥居や漆器などに用いられてきました。

Precautions for handling

 

①   This product is coated with natural urushi lacquer and may cause a rash to those that are allergic.

②   Urushi lacquer has a property which makes it become transparent over many years, so as times passes, the color of the drawers will fade.

③   The fittings that are on the drawers may cause injury if bumped into.

④   As the fittings are made of metal, they may rust. If this occurs, you can apply a small amount of plant-based oil such as vegetable oil or camellia oil and wipe with a soft cloth. By doing so you can prevent the metal fittings from rusting and add a bit of luster to them.

⑤   The paulownia wood that is used for the drawers may expand based on changes in the humidity and climate and may make the drawers a little tight to pull out.

⑥   If you place the drawers in direct sunlight, or near an air conditioner, or near a stove, the light, heat, or wind may cause deformation or discoloration.

⑦   When cleaning the drawers, please use a dry soft cloth. If there is any moisture on the drawers, please wipe the drawers as soon as possible.

⑧   Do not wipe the drawers with any chemical wipes, silicone, and so on.

⑨   Do not use any tape, such as cellophane tape and so on the drawers. If you use tape on the drawers, then it may damage the coating when you remove the tape.

 

 

取り扱い上の注意点

①本製品は本漆で塗装してあるので、漆にかぶれることがあります。

②漆は年月が経つに従って透けてくる特性がありますので色合いが薄くなっていきます。

③意匠上金具が付いているのでぶつかるとケガをすることがあります。

④金具が錆びる恐れがあります。その場合は椿油等（植物性の油）を表面に少量塗り、

   柔らかい布で拭いてください。金具の錆止めや、ツヤだしにもなります

⑤抽出に使用している桐材は湿度の変化や気候の移り変わりにより膨らみ抽出がきつく

  なることがあります。

⑥直射日光に当てたりストーブやエアコンのそばに置くと光や熱、エアコンの風によって変形したり変色したりすることがあります。

⑦お手入れは乾いた柔らかい布で拭いてください。水気はできるだけ早く拭き取ってください。

⑧化学雑巾、シリコン等では拭かないでください。

⑨セロハンテープなどの粘着テープを貼付しないでください。剥がす時、塗膜面を傷つけることがあります。
