2. The land where Iwayado Tansu was born

 Japanese Tansu is manufactured in various parts of Japan. A type of Japanese chests of drawers, Iwayado Tansu, was born in Iwayado (currently Esashi Ward, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture) in the mountains of the Tohoku region. One of the five prefectures in the Tohoku region and the northern part of the Japanese archipelago, Iwate Prefecture is the second largest prefecture in Japan after Hokkaido. With forests covering 75% of its area, Iwate is home to some of Japan’s 100 famous mountains, including Mt. Iwate, Mt. Hachimantai and Mt. Hayachine.The Kitakami River, the largest river in the Tohoku region, flows from the north to the south of the prefecture and empties into the Pacific Ocean. The eastern part of the prefecture facing the ocean forms a complex ria coastline with many good natural ports.

 Although Tohoku is a land of harsh winters, it boasts rich nature brought by the sea, mountains, and rivers, and has nurtured a unique culture since ancient times that cannot be found in Tokyo or Kyoto. This is why it is attracting a high level of attention as a tourist destination not only from within Japan but also from overseas. Morioka City, the prefectural capital, was selected as the second-best place to visit in the “52 Places to Go in 2023” by the New York Times of the U.S., following London. The reasons given for its selection are that it is only a short distance from Tokyo, is lined with attractive architecture such as Taisho-era buildings that blend Japanese and Western styles and traditional inns, is full of nature with a river running through the city, and has a park at the castle ruins where visitors can walk around avoiding the crowds.

 The land of Iwayado, located in the southern inland area of Iwate Prefecture, is sandwiched between the Oshu mountain range and the Kitakami mountain range, both blessed with high-quality mountain forests. It has long prospered as a commercial city located at a strategic transportation point, taking advantage of the water transportation of the Kitakami River that runs through the city. The town of Hiraizumi-cho, which borders the southern part of Iwayado, developed into a city of culture comparable to Kyoto in the 12th century, and the opulence and splendor of Hiraizumi culture was the envy of all Japan at the time.

Chuson-ji Temple, which symbolizes the splendor of Hiraizumi culture, is a massive temple complex of halls, pagodas, gardens, and other cultural assets that remain to this day, including Konjikido Golden Hall built with technology of highest quality in medieval Japan. Chuson-ji Temple was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011 as historical structures representing the Buddhist Pure Land.

Iwayado Tansu was born in Iwate, a prefecture blessed with nature and culture since ancient times.

 

 

 　

日本各地で製造されている和箪笥。その一つである「岩谷堂箪笥」は、東北地方の山間にある岩谷堂（現在の岩手県奥州市江刺区）で生まれました。日本列島の北部にあたる東北地方の５つの県の一つである岩手県は、北海道に次いで日本で２番目に広い県です。その75％を森林が占め、県内には岩手山、八幡平、早池峰山といった日本百名山に名を連ねる名峰の数々がそびえています。県の北から南へ東北最大の大河・北上川が流れ、太平洋に注ぎこみ、その海に面した県の東側は複雑なリアス式海岸を形成して、多くの天然の良港を有しています。

　東北は、冬の寒さの厳しい土地でありながら、海、山、川からもたらされた豊かな自然を誇るとともに、古来より東京や京都にもみられない独特の文化を育んできました。そのため観光地としても、日本だけでなく海外からも高い注目を浴びており、県庁所在地の盛岡市は、アメリカの『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙が選ぶ「2023年に行くべき52カ所」で、ロンドンに次ぐ2番目に選出されました。その選出理由としては、東京から短時間で行け、大正時代の和洋折衷の建築物や伝統的な旅館など魅力的な建物が立ち並び、市内を川が流れるなど自然に満ちており、城跡が公園になっていて人混みを避けて歩いて回れることなどが挙げられています。

　その岩手県の内陸の南部にある岩谷堂の地は、良質な山林に恵まれた奥州山脈と北上山地に挟まれ、街中を流れる北上川の水運を活かして、古くから交通の要衝に位置する商業都市として栄えてきました。また岩谷堂の南部を接する平泉町は、12世紀には京都にも匹敵するほどの文化都市として発展し、その「平泉文化」の豪華絢爛さは、当時日本中の羨望の的となっていました。

　この平泉文化の華やかさを象徴するお寺・中尊寺には、中世日本の最高の技術により建築された仏堂「金色堂」をはじめ、多くの寺院や庭園、文化財が今日まで残されており、2011年には極楽浄土を表す建築物としてユネスコの世界遺産にも登録されています。
