Mutsumi Oitate(Kyoto・Lacquerware)
Spreading the Appeal of Gorgeous Colored Lacquer
Born in Kyoto Prefecture. In high school she was drawn to lacquerware because it allows flexibility in expression depending on one's way of thinking. She has been creating tableware and jewelry using colored lacquer ever since. “By adjusting the coating, temperature, and humidity during the drying process the color changes and over time becomes transparent and more vivid instead of fading.” In the Hanahiraku series she blends lacquer and transparent glass, so colors change when drinks are added. “I want people to use lacquerware in a variety of situations, so I choose glass styles that are familiar to people of all cultures around the world. Depending on the piece, I also use gold leaf and raden (crushed shell). I try to create more attractive and accessible pieces because many people are unaware that lacquerware has great color variety or that it can be easily maintained. Lacquerware can even be repaired if scratched which helps reduce the burden on our environment.”
